SPAM

It probably comes as no surprise that spam now accounts for nearly 90% of all incoming email.

Lucky for you, our continually evolving MailScanner system enables you to effectively manage your inbox and slow this spam onslaught to a trickle.

To manage your anti-spam and anti-virus protection, log into your user Control Panel and then select the MailScanner icon, shown at right. Here you will enter the MailScanner Configuration pages.

We recommend you choose the 'Low Scoring Spam' drop-down and change this to 'Forward to spam@domain.com'. This will send all email flagged as low-scoring spam to a spam@yourdomain.com mailbox.

Next, still in the MailScanner configuration page, select Other settings.

Here we will assign a number to email that you want to pass, email that you want to capture in your spam mailbox, and email you want to totally delete.

Default settings are available. But you can experiment with higher/lower settings. This image shows a low spam score choice of 4. A high spam score choice of 10. This means email assigned a 0.00 through 3.99 will pass harmlessly into all your standard email POP accounts. A score of 4.00 to 9.99 will pass into your spam@domain.com POP account. And a score of 10.00 or higher will be deleted. If you have customers that routinely send you email from high-scoring spam countries like China, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, etc., you may want to set your low scoring spam level higher.

To create a new spam mailbox, return to your Control Panel main page, choose the 'Mail' icon, then select 'Add/Remove/Manage Accounts'. Next, choose 'Add Account' and create a new 'spam@yourdomainname.com' email account.

Once you've created your new 'spam' email account, you will want to occasionally check it for any legitimate email which may have been tagged as possible spam. Several commercially available applications are handy. You can setup an account in your Outlook (spam@yourdomain.com) to check the spam account. And you already have a free, built-in method. In your browser, enter your domain followed by /webmail.

Enter your username (your full spam@domain.com) email and the password you assigned to the spam email account. A popup will ask for your username and password.

Next, you will select the horde icon.

Following that, click the login button.

And, lastly, click the MAIL navigation on the left side of your screen to view all the email in your spam@domain.com POP account.

More great options exist to help you further manage your POP accounts successfully. In the MailScanner cofiguration page are Email Black/Whitelist settings.

To prevent a specific email from being tagged as spam, you can add that email address to your MailScanner 'whitelist'. To do so, return to the MailScanner section of your Control Panel and select the 'Email Black/Whitelist settings '. Add any friendly email addresses to your whitelist. You may also permanently blacklist any addresses as well by adding them to your blacklist.

If any of this is confusing, or for more information on customizing your anti-spam protection or changing the default settings, drop us an email.

We're always happy to help!
